You’ve probably seen some of my Instagram posts with the hashtag #getonthebox. I’ve been asked what this means by lots of people and so, I thought it would be good to spend the first blog post of “Tell Your Story” talking to you guys about what it means to #getonthebox.
After years playing football for Northeastern and Boston Universities, I let my health get away from me. Over the course of about ten years I went from a fit 225 pounds to a heavy 290. During that time, I found it difficult to motivate myself to improve.
Once I got married to Rachel, I tried to be the best version of myself. That resolve redoubled when my daughter Melina was born in 2013. I wanted to be the best husband and father I could be for them so I focused much of my attention on them while neglecting my health. Finally, in March of 2015 I decided to invest in my health and joined a gym called Metabolic Meltdown. As a result, I lost 50 pounds over the course of a year. Not only was I able to shave weight, I was also able to start living a healthier lifestyle and got an entirely new perspective on what it means to be me. I decided to #getonthebox.
Getting on the box comes from a form of progressive strength training Metabolic calls “advanced movements”. This includes things like adding a chain around your neck when you’re lifting or putting your feet up on a box when you’re doing push-ups. These small changes increase your body’s range of motion and make it more difficult to perform the exercise. As you get on the box, your body adapts to the challenge and becomes stronger. Eventually you add a heavier chain or more levels to the box and push yourself into the next level.
This principle has shaped so much of my life and I am measurably happier because of it. Where once I was satisfied to be flat on the ground doing what I thought was sufficient work, I have now begun to challenge myself. I created the Repshaver and this site to break the mold and step into new territory. I have found that as I’ve made videos, Instagram posts and worked with others to tell their stories I have been so fulfilled and happy. Don’t get me wrong, it has been difficult at times for me, but I’m always learning how to improve. It’s not always easy to put myself out there, however my passion to inspire others and bring laughter to them pushes me ahead.
Anyone can do this. You can do this! Getting on the box and pushing yourself is something that will help you to better your life in many ways. Perhaps you want to get that promotion at your job, but are unsure of how to get your boss to notice your hard work. Go the extra mile! Make a few more calls to get another sale. Learn your customer’s names and greet them happily every day. Make it a priority to get up ten minutes earlier so you can be that much earlier in to work each morning. Changes like these come at a cost, and trust me it’s really heavy at first, but it gets easier. We all have to learn how to push ourselves and become better. And, honestly, you’ll never stop learning. All of these things are lifelong processes. As you continue to strive to push yourself, you’ll find that you’ve got the strength inside of you to become the best person you can be. You’ll get that promotion at work or whatever else you may be seeking for in your life.
Here at Get on the Box: Tell Your Story, I want to show you how you can make your own story into your dream. Becoming that dream person is something I know you can do. All it takes is breaking out of your comfort zone and pushing yourself. When you do, I would love for you to come share your experience on the site. “Tell Your Story” is a place where each of us can build one another up and together #getonthebox. As we work together, we will see more and more changes until we’ve all become exactly who we want to be.
Out of respect to the Metabolic “fitfam” community, I no longer record videos during workouts. The last thing I want to be is a distraction to them. However, here are a handful of earlier videos I recorded that may inspire you towards achieving your fitness goals. If you live in the Capital Region and are looking for a fitness community, I encourage you to stop by one of the four (soon to be five) Metabolic Meltdown locations for a free trial. Tell them Kito or The Repshaver sent you!
